My life is AWESOME*!!!

I get at least 4 solid job-possibility emails a week - all in DC, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia.... Meanwhile, I have spent 1/2 of my daughter's life away from home... All I want is a respectable Remedy Dev job working on custom code in Oregon or SW Washington... Is that too much to ask? I make amazing awesome shit, but no one in the PNW is hiring. Unemployment + living with your parents is AWESOME*!!!

Ok - I'm no terrorist, but Jesus...

I know nothing about explosives except what I learned by growing up as a male in the 80s and 90s in the united states and even I could have done a better job than that dumb motherfucker in New York... I mean - gasoline and firecrackers? shit.... I don't want to give any instructions or spoilers or anything, but have you ever heard of a pipe bomb? (There's this thing called the internet - it can give you some details....) Is there someone stupider? I think that's the greatest weakness of the latest batch of "terrorists." They are all stupid. Chronically stupid. Debilitatingly stupid. If we ever had someone with half a brain wanting to damage the united states, we'd be in trouble.

This all brings me back to one of my (least) favorite topics: the TSA (douchebags.)

I'm not going to talk about the time that they cut off my TSA approved locks instead of using their TSA master key to just unlock them or the time they used a screwdriver to pry open (and break) the case to a "tool-less" external hard drive enclosure... Instead - recent events have confirmed my conclusion that these low-paid, un-vetted non-technical gorillas are doing nothing to keep us "safe" and secure. Further - it seems to me that our government cares much more about making it appear as if they are making us safe then they do about actually making us safe.

It's like our "war on drugs"... Fighting the war on drugs is much more important than putting an end to drug crime. The western world has plenty of examples on how to reduce crime and reduce drug related crime, but we turn a blind eye because we think it's a public relations "win" to keep fighting the "war on drugs." I'm disgusted...

as to the suggestion that my opinion of white castle burgers might be influenced by the hour (it's 3:29 AM currently) or the amount of beers I've consumed I must respond by saying "Fuck you. White castle is the shit. You're just jealous that you aren't munching on 6 burgers while watching poker on espn classic at 3:30 AM. Bitches....."

A-Team Movie Dream Team

So - the latest on the A-Team movie as of a few months ago is that they postponed it for at least a year or two, don't have a completed script, and lost their director. Because of the way the world works, I'm sure there will eventually be an A-Team movie. I don't expect it to be great cinema or anything, but I do expect it to be a fun, sometimes silly, action movie staying mostly true to the spirit of the original while rebooting it for modern times. Instead of being Vietnam vets, they'll be gulf war vets, etc... Who knows - maybe the van will be a suburban or something...

That said - I've heard many many things about who will be cast in this movie over the years - some good and some not so good.... Just as a fun speculation, I thought I would list who I thought would be best for the roles (and work well together,) and then invite others to suggest other names that might be good. With that out of the way - here goes:
(Note - Some of these have been suggested by others - I'm mostly putting together a list of the best I've seen suggested so far. A couple of them I thought of without having someone else suggest it first.)

Ok look, if I were to devote my life to correcting the misuse of the English language that I found on the internet, I would never be able to leave my computer. It would be more futile than visiting each and every individual in the galaxy and personally insulting every one of them.

However, there is a particularly disturbing abuse that I have seen three times in the last week and I feel compelled to mention it.

If you type "John could of done it differently" in some forum or blog thread you will make everyone who reads it think that you are an idiot. The people who assume this will probably be assuming correctly.

What you meant to type was "...could have..." or perhaps if you really wanted to emulate spoken English, you could stretch it and type "...could've...," which even my spell checker insists is wrong, but is still worlds better than "... could of..."

Which brings me to another point... I'm not going to try to squeeze too much in here but, if you can not spell words correctly, the least you could do is switch to a browser like Firefox that has a built in spellchecker.

Mac cloning solutions: Super Duper vs. Carbon Copy Cloner

I just found this old draft blog post just hanging out not quite finished. I didn't even realize that I hadn't published it. Even though it's a little dated, CCC is still just awesome. I use time machine for system backups, but when cloning a hard drive nothing out there beats CCC. I used it again recently when I upgraded Mathea's machine from a 250gb to a 500gb drive, my parents from a 160gb to a 320gb, and mine from a 500gb to a 750gb... Yes, in one month I had to crack open 3 apple laptops and swap hard drives. Anyway, Carbon Copy Cloner is great and you should try it out.

I also still have a couple of laptop hard drives available if anyone wants them. Installation services included.

I've been a big fan of Super Duper for a long time. The interface is clean; it's reliable; while you are supposed to pay for it, you get most of the functionality for free. It can do incremental or full backups. Nice software.

Carbon Copy Cloner has been around for a long time also, but I never really checked it out until today. (I'll get to the reason in a minute.) I have to say I'm impressed. The UI is just a tiny tiny bit less clean, clear, and easy. But really, just a tiny bit. There's nothing wrong with the UI, it's just not as polished as Super Duper is.
However - there are two other areas where CCC is very superior to Super Duper. The first is pricing. I know I just finished telling you that almost all functionality in Super Duper is free, but... Well, the developer of CCC says it best - here is a quote from the product page:

Now, the reason I went to CCC in the first place is that I'm copying my nearly full 320GB that's currently in my MBP to a new 500GB that I just bought via firewire 800. I started a copy using Super Duper. Even though I had configured it to erase the destination drive before starting and then clone the source drive to the destination drive, (copy EVERYTHING) it was evaluating each file to determine if it needed to be copied before it copied it. I'm not positive that that's what slowed it down, but it was going very slow and the progress display kept saying that it was evaluating files (and then copying them.)

The 320 --> 500 is the biggest I've ever done from my mac and I just couldn't take how slow it was going. After half an hour it was maybe 15% done so I canceled it knowing that perhaps I had just cost myself 30 minutes and would have to just start over again.

I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner just to give it a try. I'm so glad I did.

Dear Bill Sizemore,

I have recently learned of your ballot measure 58 that would force Oregon schools to scrap bilingual education programs in favor of a one size fits all immersion program (one year only of immersion for ESL students entering school in kindergarten through 4th grade; 1.5 years of immersion for students entering school in 5th through 8th grades; and two years for students entering school in high school.)

I don't believe that this plan takes into account the differences between students and how a students background might affect his abilities. I do however believe that you are a douchebag. Do you perhaps have a degree in education that helped you determine the best way to educate foreign language students? Years of study that lead you to determine that this plan of yours is for some reason better that the one that is currently in place in most states including Oregon? Do you have any reason to believe that you are in any way more qualified to design education plans for foreign language students than the education experts specializing in this field?

What's that you say? You don't have a degree in education? Oh, you received a bachelor's degree in Theology from Portland Bible College. I don't think that qualifies you to do anything at all. Perhaps if you had studied a useful subject you would have understood that this plan of yours will actually cost the state more money and not save money as you continue to insist.

If bookkeeping's not your bag, you could have instead gone for some straightforward research before penning this educational sabotage. You might have researched the similar law that was passed in Arizona that cost the state $2,740 extra per ESL student. Had you looked into that law, you would have also learned that the law has not had any impact on reducing drop out rates for ESL students and has not improved standardized tests for ESL students.

In conclusion, you're a fucking douchebag. Causing vast amounts of damage to Oregon tax law isn't enough for you you fucking asshole? You have to now directly fuck up our schools? Fuck you you piece of shit. You've caused enough damage to our state. Please never write another ballot measure again for the rest of your life. Prick.

Ok - a very very small number of movie trailers actually make me excited when I watch them; it's different from just 'wanting' to see the movie... It's almost like a feeling that the movie trailer itself is somehow meaningful. I'm left with a sense that by having watched the trailer, I am now a part of something important.

I realize that this may make me sound crazy...

The trailers that I have experienced this with were the first Star Wars Episode I trailer I saw; the first Transformers trailers I saw; and just a little bit with the trailers for the both of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. (I'm a huge Batman fan and I think these two recent Batman movies are the greatest thing to happen to the franchise, but the trailers didn't quite strike me the same way as the Transformers trailer.)

I just did a 5 minute test with the new online photo-editing tool that Adobe is scared of - Aviary -

They are in beta right now, and I have some invites for friends - gmail me if interested. It looks far far better than Adobe's online crippled apps.... They are a joke really. This thing might not quite match thick-client photoshop, but it looks like it will do a better job than any of the other online solutions by far....

(Oh - Used GIMP the other day for the first time - was at work and I had to make a button with my work laptop. I don't yet have a full opinion of it - I'm pretty sure my biggest problem with it was that it was NOT photoshop - and by that I mean that the navigation was different and the tools worked differently and it was hard to get around in just because I'm familiar with a different way of doing things. I'll have to use it some more to really figure out how I feel about it - I'm guessing that my conclusion will be that it's not as good as photoshop, but I'm willing to keep an open mind for now. Oh - and as far as GIMP vs. Aviary - tough call considering how little experience I have with either of them, but for now, I may be leaning towards Aviary - we'll revisit this in a few weeks.)

Fuck. The car broke down in Nebraska near Lincoln. I'm sooooo glad I joined AAA before I left...

Some clarification has been requested for the poll questions.
In the question about ass-kickery - the 6 robots are the 6 robots from Bladerunner. There are 1000 zombies attacking the small town, 50 pirates, 10 ninjas... The aliens are clearly the aliens from the Alien movie series - think specifically the second movie, Aliens. There are 6 of them.

For the free-for-all battle royal we decided to make things a little more interesting....

The 6 robots are:

The Terminator (T800, not T1000. Or, Arnold to those who don't remember which model was which.)
Lieutenant Commander Data (before his emotion chip)
Robocop (technically a cyborg, but close enough) - He's the only robot with a weapon; he has his pistol and 200 rounds.
The special robot from the iRobot movie. (For the Asimov fans out there, he can be considered a slightly modified zeroeth law robot who is very strong and very fast.)
A 'Bishop style' robot based on the Alien movie series
Rutger Hauer's character from Bladerunner

The robots are working together as a team. (The selection criteria for the robots was: "Classic Humanoid Movie Robots" - If you have suggestions for others, post it in the comments section.)

There are 1000 zombies.

Zombification is caused by a bacteria that infects the tissue.
The bacteria kills you and re-animates corpses. Corpses can be re-animated whether or not they were killed by the bacteria.
Get some infected blood or saliva in your eye, mouth, or in a cut, you're one of them in a few hours. Get some on your skin, you're probably OK if you clean it off quickly.
Zombies can not be used as hosts for aliens - the aliens need live hosts.
To kill a zombie you must destroy or remove the brain. (Cutting the head off of a zombie is pretty much good enough because at that point they're not much more than a soccer ball.)
Zombie corpses are still infectious.

There are 100 ninja with swords and other period equipment
There are 100 pirates with swords, muzzle loading rifles and a few muzzle loading pistols. Let's say they have enough powder for about 20 to 30 shots each.
There is 1 queen alien, 6 soldier aliens, and a room full of mature eggs.

They all get dropped off in separate but equal sections of a very large defunct space station that still has life support and motion-sensing power doors, but not much else. They all know that there are "enemies" somewhere in the space station, but they don't know anything else. The only firearms in the entire space station are those of the pirates and Robocop's pistol.

There are a few classic spaceship tools lying around, like welders and such as well as a small supply of metal bits, chains, etc.

There's enough food and water on the space station that the pirates and ninja (and Robocop, Rutger Hauer, and Bishop) could live for a few months.

So - who would be left standing at the end?
